Gifted/Talented Education in Texas
In 1977, the Texas Legislature passed its first legislation concerning the education of gifted/talented (G/T) students. In 1979, state funds for providing services to G/T children were made available, but providing such services was optional for school districts.
In 1987, the Texas Legislature mandated that all school districts must identify and serve G/T students at all grade levels. In 1990, The Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students was adopted, and in 1999, the Texas Performance Standards Project for Gifted/Talented Students (TPSP) was created.
Today, Texas educators are committed to meeting the unique needs of G/T students and to expanding the ways we do so. TEKS Resource System
A curriculum management system developed by the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum Collaborative, which is comprised of Texas' 20 Education Service Centers. The system includes a curriculum framework for grades K-12 in all foundational academic subject areas aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

Why was the TCMPC formed?
The TCMPC was formed to help schools operate in a way that allows teachers to do what they do best - educate students. By providing schools a resource aligned with what the state of Texas has determined students are expected to learn (TEKS), teachers can spend more time focusing on students and improving the learning environment in schools.
The TCMPC is dedicated to helping schools maximize resources in order to advance students’ academic success.
The TCMPC provides content and support for an online curriculum management system known as the TEKS Resource System. The content includes curriculum and assessment components aligned to the most current versions of the State Board of Education-adopted TEKS for the following subject areas:
English Language Arts and Reading (grades K-12)
Mathematics (grades K-12)
Science (grades K-12)
Social Studies (grades K-12)
Spanish Language Arts and Reading (grades K-5)
Spanish translated versions of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies (grades K-5)

STAAR logoIn spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program includes annual assessments for grades 3–8 in reading and mathematics; assessments in writing at grades 4 and 7; in science at grades 5 and 8; and in social studies at grade 8; and end-of-course assessments for English I, English II, Algebra I, biology and U.S history. Additionally, STAAR EOC assessments for English III and Algebra II will be administered on a voluntary basis beginning in spring 2016.
The resources on this website provide information to familiarize Texas educators and the public with the design and format of the STAAR program. The information is intended to help educators understand how the new STAAR program measures the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum standards. These resources are intended to support, not narrow or replace, the teaching of the state-mandated curriculum, the TEKS.
